Manor Farm Leisure

Peg 8 Middle
144lb
1st place
21 fished

Manor Farm Leisure today, brilliant new you have an extra 30 minutes to kit up, no more rushing around.

I hoping to draw Middle Pool, which I did and draw peg 8.  Spot on, as the wind was off my back.  Alot of F1's were caught shallow yesterday, Ben Sutor had over 200lb on peg 12.

Started short, for no bites, went long, fir very slow.  Paul on peg 4 was catching really well down the edge on the method feeder.

There was quite a few carp topping in the middle of lake, so off my box and get the waggler rod out of the van, which was a good move.  Caught in flurries,  not many fish, but good stamp carp.

Nice carp on the waggler.

Paste Fishing

Paste fishing has to be one of my favourite ways of fishing on commericals, people that have known me for a while, know that I was a proper "paste head" at one stage and would feed a lot of bait with it, which gave me mixed results. I either won the match or I would come last, and there was too many matches where I blew my peg and I would of been better fishing pellets or corn rather than fishing paste (in March 😂).

Some people do hate paste fishing and these people normally refer fo it as "noddy fishing" or "people that can't fish pellets probably" and "fishing the poo".  However the results on paste fishing speak for themselves.

I will warn you it is messy and bowl of water and even wet wipes after could be a good shout. Unless you like me 😂.

Personally I've had some great sucess on paste fishing in 2018, won quite a few matches on paste and set a lake record at Alvechurch on Horseshoe with 16 people fishing on the lake, 201lb. Also my highest ever 5 hour match weight on paste was at Rolfs with 394lb with ..... fishing. (Rolfs fish like a lot of venues are looked after at weigh in 6 keepnets were used and a few board fish. Any fish over 10lb are weighed/recorded and returned immediately).

I used to use it a lot at Ivy House Lakes (probably had my best ever run in open matches there). Also Wickwater at South Cerney Lakes, 16 ish years ago, where I learnt to fish it (god I miss them days).

Pellets

Last year Animo Pellets or Animo oil was added to my mix in the hight of the summer. I found fishery pellets over wetted or Skretting based pellets were my number one shout.

Corn

Sounds strange, but feeding corn and fishing paste over the top is a good shout on some venues. I use corn a lot at Alvechurch as you have a 2kg limit of pellets/groundbait limit. Therefore I use a lot of corn there, sometimes 5 tins. I use Lidi corn, straight of the tin. I know some anglers swear by Green Giant, and it is good, but almost double the price and I personally don't feel its much better.

I know some anglers use frozen corn, 1kg bags. Its soft and seems to work well for some anglers, especailly catching skimmers at Ivy House Lakes. Baggey does really well on it. One tip on frozen corn tip whole contents of defrosted corn into a bucket of water and remove the floaters. As there always seems a couple of bits of corn that never want to sink.

Groundbaits

Groundbait paste, is something I haven't used much of. I know some anglers swear by it.

Feeding

This is very difficult to answer. To be honest I found in recent years "dumping" isn't the way to go, unless your on shed full.

When fishing paste I try to feed whilst my rig is not in the water.  Ideally feed when playing fish and then hopefully the peg is settled.... cleaner bites normally.

Rigs

Paste is not always about 0.20's plus rigs and hauling. Sometimes dropping down to 0.14 hooklengths can be so much better, especially for skimmers /bream.

Big fish

Fish can be a much bigger stamp on paste. In match conditions it doesn't take long to do weight for a short time, last 40 mintues of a match can be hectic.

Again, I do not confess to being an expert or master on paste fishing. This is my view on paste fishing, I hope my advice helps.

Manor Farm Leisure

 Peg 12 Island
109lb
5th overall
16 fished

Off to Manor Farm Leisure today and spoke to Gary Watts on Saturday night and Dave thought that maybe there could 40 guys fishing.  Proper match..... ended up been 16 anglers.  Which meant loads of room, so happy days?!

Drew Island Pool 12 which is a good area, hence why there was three of us in line.....

I got it all wrong, I thought it would be a tough match as there was nothing topping, bright sun, and Gary Watts was on Peg 6.  I thought it would be a case of rod fishing.  So kitted up 4, edge rig, skimmer line, and hard pellets at 14.5 metres.  Well they were ALL wrong.  Edge produce one skimmer, method one stocky (all casting in same hole), waggler the wind was all over the place.... bomb pellet I didn't chuck it as no carp were feeding and looking around the lake it was a shallow day.... I caught well on the "mong" in the last part of the match, but I was too far behind Chris.

Got destroyed by Chris Cameron and came no where with 109lb, can't say that about many venues.

Ivy House Lake - Canals

Ivy House Lakes
Peg 41
56lb 12oz
4th overall
Second on my lake
Won Silvers (33lb)
13 fished.

https://www.spottedfin.com/dark-super-blend

First visit to the canals at Ivy House Lakes since last year.  Was hoping to draw on Moorhen as it's been stocked with loads of F1's and little Carp, so LOADS of bites.  Unfortunately draw peg 41 on Kingfisher, which is the bend and is a good skimmer area.  Also Andy (owner) decided to do two separate matches to make it fair.

So the plan is to start on the "rat holes" to try and catch carp, Vince Shipp was bagging and Chris Timms was getting a few early ones.  I just couldn't catch stockies across, had a couple on 4mm pellets over mircos, but I was really struggling.  I didn't wanna go on my skimmer lines too early.

The best line was 7 sections down the middle with groundbait and dead maggots.  Fished 0.3 Jon Walker Slim to 0.13 and 0.08 and 22 Guru F1 hook and single maggot.  Landed two carp on this rig to..   7lb and 6lber.

I my favourite groundbait for swimmers is Spottedfin's Dark Blend with dead maggots and a few fishery mirco pellets in it.

Ralph Hillier won the match with 78lb.  Legend

Edge fishing with maggots

Maggots on commercials can be deadly, especially done the edge in the warmer months.

With the warmer weather on its way, I thought I'd share a post with you on maggot fishing down the edge.  In recent times, a I have been a good believer in feeding dead red maggots down the edge for big carp and sometimes big weights.  I simply buy fresh maggots, ensure they are cool and clean, simply freeze them in plastic bags (ensure they are froze for at least 48 hours, otherwise they will come back to life).

There is no hard for fast rules I've found on feeding maggots down the edge, but hopefully a few pointers may help you.  I must stress I don't claim to be master or expert on any of my fishing.

Groundbait.

Grounbait and or mirco pellets.  Sometimes you need to be flexible in your approach.  For really shallow water I find feeding loose wet groundbait can be highly effective of bringing fish into the peg, but once they are they then only feeding maggots over the top can be best.  This can be more productive and produce clean bites.  However, other days you may need to feed groundbait more frequently, even to every single fish.  This can require a lot of bait, a few kilos of groundbait and 4 or more pints of maggots.

Slop and maggots

When fishing short, top kit (2.5 metres), sloppy groundbait or crushed pellets with maggots can be awesome.  This can work really well in shallow waters like Todber Manor and Alders Farm.  Both places ive had some decent sucess.  But I must say, not that I am a "name dropper" but Trevor Price is the best angler I've seen doing this method. Is there anyone better?

Timing

Normally maggots down the edge is best in the later stages of match.  If your lucky you may catch early, especially on evening matches or draw a really good peg with plenty of room.  "Ends and bends" Heronbrook quote.

Sometimes going straight down the edge can produce a few quick fish.  Ivy House Lakes we used to do it a lot on the Match Lake.  If you were lucky you may get a couple of units early.

Position

Some venues, its best to fish to the next platform  (if allowed), as the fish may think this is waste bait left over from someone throwing their bait in.

Depth, this can be unbelievable, Todber in the summer I was fishing in 9 inches of water and catching fish up to 8lb.

Gear used

In 2018 I used my Garbolino UK2 for most of summer commerical fishing, especially edge fishing. Also I liked using strong reliable gear, normally 0.18 line is about right.  I fish it straight through if there is no snags and fished Yellow Ozone 2.5mm elastic on most occasions, as this fish can cruise out of the peg trying to cause the minimum disturbance.  The Garbolino top kits, are shorter than some poles, therefore the elastic will power up quicker.

If I was fishing more demanding venues like the Match Lake at Ivy House or Heronbrook, then I would not hesitate to fish 3mm hollow elastic  and 0.22 line with big bunches of maggots on a hook.

Floats, always Jon Walker floats.  So strong and durable.  I like cane bristles and glass stems. Cane is buoyant, strong and very visible.  Glass is very strong and stable.  Floats can vary from 0.1 to 0.5 gram, basically the more solid it is, then the heavier the float.  Bigger fish, can sometimes require very light floats.  This will depend on the venue you fish and conditions.

My biggest match weight

My biggest weight on maggots down the edge was at Manor Farm Leisure May Festival, which was 313lb in 5 hours, with over 50 anglers on the whole venue (not a 4 pegger).

Manor Farm Leisure - Island Pool

Peg 23 Island Pool
46lb
No good, but lovely days fishing.
12 fished

I didn't plan to go fishing today, and when i drew peg 23 Island Pool, I wish I went to the gym to be honest.  I seem to draw Peg 23 Island Pool quite a lot and normally either win or come last, and I normally come last....

After yesterday's match, as predicted,  I felt a shallower peg with flat water (if possible) would be best.  And if you know Manor Farm Leisure peg 23 is one of the deepest pegs on the pole line.

My match started at 6 meters for no bites on pellets.  Then went out 14.5 metres, for 2 skimmers and 4lb carp.  I was going no where, so cupped in 4 big balls of Dark Super Blend at 11 metres, as wind is getting up and hoped I could line the skimmers up? Unfortunately the skimmers did come reasonably frequent, but had to have looks for carp.  The pellet feeder was fruitless and so was the edges, well had one crazy Roach/Bream hybrid about 1.5lb.... while having looks for carp, I fed small wet balls of groundbait which helped build my skimmer line, wind was awful.

My one number skimmer groundbait for last few months.

I decided to get my head down and try and catch some skimmers on double dead maggot 4 inches overdepth with a 0.8 gram rig over groundbait. This was quite productive, maybe I should of fed it from the start? I hoped to get an odd F1 or even carp chucked in on this line, which unfortunately didn't happen.  My logic was that if i got 60lb ish, which was achievable, and Fordy won the match, which I thought he may, then there coule be a default prize.  As Manor payout today was first overall and then two sections.  However, Fordy weighed 85lb, so I was nowhere near that.

Manor Farm Leisure will be restocking, and the rumor is that £12,000 worth of F1's across the venue.  This should be taking place very soon
42lb of skimmers

All the weights.... "no lies"
Gear used

Harescombe - Field Lake

Peg 5
98lb
Won match
8 fished

A 12 peg knock up at Harescombe Fisheries unfortunately turned into 8 pegger, so maybe a little better as we had more room and everyone had a margin swim to fish to.
With the mild weather, I hoped to draw the shallows, which lucky enough I did.

It was going all out pellet approach and last few hours I'd fish maggots and mirco pellets down the edge.  Groundbait is only allowed through the feeder.

The carp.in Harescombe fight so hard!!

I started at 5 meters on the slope, which resulted in no bites..... a bit disappointed.  So went down the edge with pellets, dripped in 12 4mm pellets with a 6mm expander on.  Which resulted in a instant bite and a lost fish.... pulled out.  So went in again and had 3 carp and it went quiet.  So plugged away at margins and fed 5 and 13 metre lines whilst fishing down the edge.  Steve Partington was catching well, he was also catching down his edge with maggots and Big Frank Donachie was also catching down his edge with maggots.

Nightmare, my line got caught around the pole pot, unbelievably nothing broke or pulled out.

A bit lucky to get this one out.

I went onto the 13 metre line, which i built up and had a run of 5 carp before it went iffy.

5 metre line was decent in last hour, had 3 carp short, one 10lber.  Ended up with 16 carp for 98lb and a little win.  Frank Donachie also had 16 carp, but were smaller, weighed in 73lb.  All weights are below.

Spottedfin is best expanders ive ever used.

Last two hours turned my negative margin swim into more aggressive.

All weights.  Wanted to be in the shallower water today.
