Live fishing match at Manor Farm Leisure on Middle Pool

Monday 5 October 2020

Ivy House Lakes - Heron Pool

  •  Peg 23
  • 111lb 8oz
  • Third overall
  • 13 Fished

Back to Heron lake at Ivy House Lakes, which I have missed, as I haven't fished it for a while.  Neil drew me peg 23, which is a good peg, to be honest at this time of year I believe the lake is very fair.

I set up shallow, edges, deck rigs, and a paste rig (October).  Andy (owener) advised me to get the paste as a few of the locals had caught on it really well despite the weather been a little cold for "normal paste fishing".

I started at 4 metres on 6mm expander and caught immediately, but small carp and a couple of carp that didn't count (the small carp 1 to 2oz) to be swung in and then put back (to protect future stock).  The fish had already offspring!  This made me go to paste and it was solid, the first hour see me have 32lb, then I had spells of catching well and period of not. Edges didn't really come alive and unfortunately only caught 4oz to 6oz fish... I should of gone longer and shallow, but I felt my peg would get stronger been on an "end peg" and the last hour I would bag up!!!   Err wrong, the last hour proved tough and see me, like a few others fade away.  I'm not complaining, I had a good days fishing, but wanted to do better in the overall standings.

Mawgan Porth

This is a guide to how I would fish Mawgan Porth match lake, how it helps.  My last three visits to this venue has seen me win the match, third overall and a section in the section.  So decent results, I always fish it at the beginning of September and our matches that I have fished has had 19 anglers plus.  I'm not expert, but I hope my guide will help you?

Mawgan Porth is a beautiful venue in the heart of Cornwall.  Its owed and run by Trevor who is really helpful and friendly guy.  The fish are stunning, fin prefect and fight really hard as they are so healthy.

For me I'd fish a negative match, big pots of bait are a no no.... unless you fishing down the edge, bit most of the time I'd try and starve them on the hook.

Match Lake pegs

Peg 1 is on the gate, isn't normally in the matches.

Peg 8 on the bridge

Peg 14 on point of the Island

Peg 16 on lilly pads

Peg 18 on bottom bank, edge of lilly pads

Peg 20 on the pipe.

Peg 22 on the point of the Island (16 metres).  Its 4 foot against the bank infront and to the right by the reeds its 5 foot.

Peg 27 On the airetor

Peg 34 end peg (tougher end, unless the warm wind is blowing into it).

Gear used

Garbolino UK1 pole

Open water rig;

0.5 Jon Walker float

0.16 to 0.11 hooklength

18 B911

1.4mm Dan's elastic soild core.

Edge

0.3 Jon Walker float

0.18 straight through

16 B911 X Strong.

1.8mm Dan's elastic

Depths

The bottom bowl pegs 12 to 22 is about 5 foot.  Up the top of the lake is about 4 foot.  Edges can be quite deep, 3 foot.

Bait

Worm mix in open water was great method and dead maggots with fishery mircos down the edge.  There are some big carp, Jason Crump had one 15lb 10oz and Laurie Lang had 70lb of units all down the edge on maggots

Ian Garner Memorial Match

Today's match see me fishing South Cerny's Wickwater, which I must of spent hours fishing it years ago.   On Ian Garner's memorial match today.  22 pairs fishing.

Me and Dan Garner drew peg 4 and unfortunately both of us struggled to catch fish, but enjoyed the day none the less.  I had 18lb 8oz of small skimmers.

Well done to Andy Burns and Glyn Loveday for winning again.

The team did really well and raised £1893 for Prostate Cancer.

Fishing Pole Care (FPC)

Fishing poles are likely to be the most expensive item of tackle that you may ever own, then its important you look after it!!

This is how I look after my fishing poles.

  • Use two pole rollers to support your pole when shipping back, where possible.
  • Use flat rollers and not V shape roller, as the V's you can easily get your pole blown up and over the pole
  • Pole roller should have a hook, so you can put a bucket of water to secure roller, and it wont get blown over.
  • Wipe you pole down after every session, with wet wipes.  I use Lidi kitchen wipes, 75 pence per pack.
  • Check elastics for damage or wear.  Also check the bush.

Plastic bushes do get damaged

Introduction to Match Fishing

I’ve been a match angler for over 25 years and there is not a minute that I regret been a match angler.  Match fishing is what you make of it, it can be highly competitive, expensive and time consuming. Or it can be with a group of friends that fish together and have a crack.

This post gives you information on how to start match fishing, as I did.

The beginning

Normally you start coarse fishing with a family friend or mate, I started with Uncle and Dad. So I was lucky I had a few family members that took me as a kind.  I fished mainly South Cerney Angling Club waters and the Abbey Lake Angling Club, both clubs still operate 25 years on.  So I learnt the basics of fishing and my dad encouraged me to fish junior matches.

Gaining knowledge

Like any hobby or sport, knowledge is the key to success (knowledge is power).  There is so much you can learn through social media, publications, coaching days, asking people you fish against or see on the bank.  Most anglers are very approachable.

Magazines

Anglers Mail
Angling Times

And many more

Club fishing

So I fished local club matches as a junior for South Cerney Angling Club and enjoyed them, it was run by Pete Sarahs who is a living legend.  This was great as you had inter club matches, whereby you would fish against another clubs and met you people and learn new methods.  As lots of venues have their own little tweaks and you can learn transferable information.  Great way of meeting people and I went onto fishing Peatmoor Angling club people matches too.

Your next step could be moving onto the open match circuit, or stick to what you enjoy.  There's nothing in the rule book stating that you must progress from your club circuit. There are supported events for club fishing,  Garbolino do an event called the Match Fishing Club man of year.  Also Bait-tech does prizes and events dedicated to club anglers.

Open matches

Open matches is where venues run matches on their match, and the entry fee per match catch be from £20 to £30, and some matches can be more.  A lot venues run open match every week, four or more on some venues.

I would suggest picking a venue that suites your preferred style of fishing and set your stall small, don’t have great exceptions that your going to catch loads of fish and win.  I found a massive jump from club fishing to open fishing.  I was reasonably successful on my local circuit as a club angler at the age of 16, then fished against lads that have been fishing longer than I’ve been alive.  However, defeat is a great way of learning, as I had to up my game to compete.  When I go to new venues, I do prepare myself to get beat, but you learn from that and go again and hopefully put your wrongs right. This what makes fishing so interesting.

Team Fishing

I spent a good amount of my angling time team fishing, which is a great way of learning and interacting with people.  The matches I have fished is;

Spring League on the K&A teams of 4
Summer League on the Oxford circuit (formerly known as Drennan Super League)
Angling Trust winter league.  (This is biggest winter league in the country, as the top 2 of each league come together to fish the final)

Team fishing is fishing for points, so normally the highest weight will get 1 point and then second gets 2 points, and so on.  The team with the overall lowest points will win.

Introduction to Coarse Fishing

I've been coarse fishing for over thirty years and have enjoyed every mintue of it!  My fishing blog is normally around my match results, but felt this post is maybe needed to new comers to the sport.

Commercials aren't all about Carp.  Alvechurch has a massive range of species.

This post gives information on what essentials you will need to start coarse fishing.
7 tips.

1. Licence

You must have a rod licence, which is issued by Environment Agency.  This can run annually from when you purchased the licence.  You are able to pay for daily too.

Dan Garner at Gillman's Lake.

2. Day tickets or joining clubs.

Most waters issue day tickets whereby you rent the peg/swim for the day, however some waters are membership only, (angling clubs).   These clubs normally have an annual membership fee.  Joining clubs is normally a great way to meet people and learn things off local anglers.

A lot of waters do have rules, so please ensure you read them.

Mick Telling at Abbey Lakes

3. Close season

The "close season" is where your unable to fish from the 15th Match to 15th June.  This is enforced on all rivers and a few stillwaters.  The majority of stillwaters and canals are still open to fish.

All day ticket waters and clubs do operate a catch and release scheme in the UK, that I know of.  So you shouldn't be taking fish away.  If you have a "Game / trout" licence, catching trout or salmon then this is different.

Pellet Fishing

This is basic guide to pellet fishing on commercial lakes, so if you new to fishing or want to improve your basic understanding of pellet fishing, then this post should be for you.

Different types of pellets.

There are so many different types of fishing pellets on the market., the two main kinds of pellets I use for my fishing is Skretting and Coppens pellets.  Both these fishing pellets are coarse pellet based, which break down a lot quicker than trout or halibut pellets.  Some fisheries will not allow trout or halibut pellets on their fishery, so check the rules before you go.  Some fisheries will only allow you to use their pellets only, which are normally coarse pellets.

Oils on pellets

There is loads of oils and additives that you could add to your bait.  I feel oils are more effective in the summer.  This will make your pellets sink faster and break down slower.

There is video below on my YouTube channel on oils.

Expanders

Expander pellets are floating pellets and do require a little preparation.  These tend to be hooker pellets and when fishing soft pellets (expanders) I would suggest using a pellet pump, to ensure they all sink.

There are other ways of preparing them and adding flavours to them.

Preston Innovations have Pro Expander pellets whereby you soak them prior to using them and they all sink.

Toss potting pellets on a pole is good and accurate way of feeding.

Fishing "Hard Pellet"

When fishing hard pellets, you use dry pellets straight from the bag, I only use a bait bands or a lasso to hook them on a hair rig.   Fishing hard pellet can be very effective in avoiding them smaller fish in the lake and brilliant for fishing up in the water as it's so much more durable than an expander.

A great video on how to tie lasso by Darren Cox does

Bait bands.  Easier to use, more durable and flexible with sizes of pellets, whereas lasso has no flexibility in various sizes.

A couple of videos on Hard Pellet Fishing

Pellet waggler

When pellet fishing on float rod, I tend to use 6mm to 8mm.  For most of my fishing I use 6mm Skretting pellets, as they sink slower than a coppens pellet and in the summer hopefully I'm going to catch more fish up in the water (2 to 3 foot) can be good.

Theres loads of pellet wagglers are the market to choice from.  I like using the Drennan Loaded Carp Crystals .

Bomb and pellet

Chucking a lead over loose feeding pellets can be highly effective.  I tend to be using a lot lighter "bombs" these days, like 10 gram.  Less disturbance and dont sink so far into the bottom of the lake.

Pellet feeder

Again loads of feeders on the market, method, hybrid, pellet feeder, etc... I like using the Matrix pellet feeders , very easy to use and fly well (easy to cast).  Normally use 2mm pellets, ensure there not too wet or packed in hard, otherwise your loose offerings won't come out so well.

Paste Fishing

Skretting pellets is the best base mix for paste fishing.  I just over wet my feed pellet and break them up and put them through a maggot riddle.  Paste fishing has to be my favourite kind of fishing in the summer on commercials for larger carp.  This method does not tend to be so effective in the cooler months.

Alvechurch Fisheries Winter League. Round 8

Last round of Alvechurch Fisheries Winter League.  Drew peg 20 on the Canal, which ain't the best or the worst.  Lucky that I had an empty peg to my left (Peg 22 wasn't drawn).
Started dobbing on bread for a Ide and Carp after trying my 5th spot.... and that was that for carp.  Introduce maggots and slowly built up two maggots lines, caught some cracking Ide, Barbel and 3 small carp.  Weighed 53lb.  More than I thought...... I didn't do any estimations!!!

Would of really enjoyed today, but I have a shocking flu.  Was coughing my guts up.  So good job Phil was 40 yards away from me!!  (Too far for kill zone)

Ended the league with 16 points, which was joint first with Steve Bellion.  But I was lucky to have 4 sections wins to Steve's 3.

Overall

1. Me
2. Steve Bellion
3. Owen Robinson
4. Phil Evans

Round 6 Alvechurch Winter League
Peg 18 Canal
Soild..... errrrrr nope.
3rd in section of 10
29 fished the match.

I had 2 early Carp and 1 late one.  Unreal.  Couldn't catch Carp, pegs 18nand 16 have been solid for weeks, Steve Bellion had 158lb 2 weeks ago on peg 18 Canal!!

I had 34lb 4oz of mainly barbel and Ide on maggots, I even caught several Barbel on hard pellets!!   Nice day really, peg was worth 50lb of them of these fish.  However, you normally get a late run of carp???? Not today

Russell on peg 16 had 35lb and Phil Evans destroyed the lake on peg 3 with 90lb ish.

Ivy House Lakes - 5th Round Winter League

Ivy House Lakes winter league.
Round 5
Peg 26
DNW

I love fishing Willow lake at Ivy House as it has some many surprises, which I found out today!!

I drew peg 26 and fancied it for a few bites, with the wind off my back, great skimmer area and a chance of carp, I thought I could get a top three finish in my section.  I hoped for an early carp on the lead but caught a skimmer, went on the pole thinking it's going to be solid with skimmers.... eeeeeer no 1 roach and 2 skimmers.   Just shows what I know about fishing!!

Derek Newson catching on feeder to island and had two carp about 45 minutes in.  I had no choice but to fish for carp for the rest of the match but I gave up 3pm and done the walk of shame.

Lost £10 in side bets..... the banter on Facebook is going to be brutal on Derek Newson's private page!!! 😂😂

Manor Farm Leisure - Silvers Only

Manor Farm Leisure
Silvers ONLY.
Round 3
Peg 42 Boundary Pool

Third time lucky to get on Boundary Pool as the last two rounds has seen me draw Ash Pool twice and have two blow outs.  Boundary Pool has been dominating the frame places and points, as it 1 point for winning, 2 points for second overall, no sections.  So unfortunately the draw bag hasn't been in my favour.  Strange really, as Ash Pool is full of skimmers, and yet don't seem to be feeding?!

Had a nightmare with the wind..... lost cap, pole sections in lake (easily got them back), lost fish, fish getting blown out of the landing net when netting (too small), F1 trouble, had to feed maggots with a catapult at 5 metres, struggled to hold 5 metres at times and fishing 4 x 18 float in 3.5 foot of water.  Looked hideous!!  And yet Still managed 21lb 2oz for third overall.  All on maggots over groundbait. Nothing fancy.  Like a lot of anglers if the conditions would of been better, them 30lb could of been on the cards.

All todays results
Top 3

Peg 8 Boundary Steve Paige 23lb 12oz (all roach)
Peg 6 Boundary Neil Chapman 21lb 8oz (2 perch and loads of roach)
Peg 42 Boundary Chris Telling (me) 21lb 2oz

Alvechurch Fisheries. Winter League. Round 5

Alvechurch Winter League.  Round 5.

I draw sock on, Peg 3 Arrow, as the fish seem to be shoaled up more in the early pegs.  So last peg in the bag as a good one (note to self, maybe I shouldn't draw??!!).

Started on pellets at 14.5 metres and caught a small carp (10oz) and a skimmer.  But either side were catching Ide, skimmers and odd BIG roach.  So decided to feed maggots and caught Ide quite well.  However felt I wasn't doing enough so "pinged" pellets to far back and fished 17.5 metres and didn't look back.  Had a brilliant day catching "stocky" carp.  Weighed 68lb to win the section/lake.

Had a great laugh with Steve.

Silvers Only League

Round 2

Peg 5 Ash.... unbelievably I drew Ash again and even more unbelievably it was solid with F1's.  Must of had 20 F1's and a small carp, lost as many.  Unreal, I put back way over 50lb of fish.  Spent most of my day playing fish that didn't count!!  My peg was worth 130lb of fish today.

Weighed 2lb and really did come last!!  My league is over, got 26 points after two rounds!!!  Got three rounds left and would like to be in Boundary in the high or low numbers to have a days fishing.

Ivy House Lakes - Round 4 of the Winter League

Well, from Hero to ZERO!!

Derek Newson gave me a lesson today.  Lost £2.

Drew peg 33 on Moorhen and got battered!! Ken and Mike gave me a WHOPPING either side.  All weights below.

I caught 70 ish roach, 4 small skimmers, 1 F1, 1 tiny carp and one carp about 2lb.  Unfortunately no munters. 🐳 I weighed 10lb 8oz to only beat 3 in section ("last").  I'm NOT moaning, but me, Mike and Ken both had one carp each.... Ken's was 11lb, Mike's between 5lb to 7lb and mine waa 2lb.  If I'd been a bit lucky with size of carp, then it would if been a different story with points.  But gosh I am really due a flyer in this league!!!

Alvechurch Fisheries. Round Four of Winter League

Round 4 of Winter League at Alvechurch.

Drew peg 24 on Horseshoe.

Bung Hole Billy Peg... weighed 120lb to win the match.  Caught on pellet feeder to the island,  nothing fancy.  Fished 0.20 to a 14 Guru QM1.  Not sure what Mark's feeds his carp, but they fight really hard.  So not point messing around on light lines. I caught in flurries, strange I would catch 3 to 4 carp in a row and then nothing, even trying to be clever, casting further to my right to chase them failed.  So it was best to sit and wait, didn't wanna risk feeding bait all over the peg and potentially mess the peg up.

I had a brilliant days fishing and weighed 120lb of all carp on the feeder.

League wise, I have two lasts and two wins!!  I have 12 points and currently 4th, but four rounds left who knows what could happen....
