Gloucester Canal

  • Hempstead
  • Around 7lb (2lb common carp)
  • 3 hours and 40mins

I thought I better had brush up on my silver skills ready for the Turner 400 this weekend, and therefore spent a quick short session on the Gloucester canal.  I was very suprised the amount of small fish that I caught, a lot of these small  silver bream, also a Zander (never caught one before), 2 small Eels, and some Perch, Roach, Bleak, oh and a CARP?!.

Manor - Boundary Pool

  • Peg 10
  • 44lb
  • Section win and 4th overall
  • 24 fished
.

I haven't fished Manor Farm Lesuire for while, so was looking forward to it.  It was on Boundary pool which is the toughest out of all the pools.  A lot of different methods do work there, and dog biscuit and baggin wag are two key methods.  However, a good breeze, I was hoping to catch skimmers and F1 on the pole at 13 meters on 4mm pellet.

I had an enjoyable day, I had 22lb skimmers and 22lb carp, but got battered by Rob who had 82lb on the "baggin waggler".   The skimmers only feed in the first two hours and then switch off, not sure why.   However pleased to win section and 4th overall.

MFS at Rolfs Lake

  • Peg 30
  • 71lb 8oz
  • Section Win
  • 5th Overall (i think)
  • 18 Fished

Peg 30 at Rolfs lake wouldn't be a peg that I would pick out of choice, especially with pegs 8, 10 and 13 in my section, this would be a preferred areas.  But this area can throw up some skimmers and these little (not that little) beauty's are worth catching.  So if the lake does fish hard, then I am in a good area to catch these skimmer bream.

I have the prototype Colmic Airon F44 pole to test and no better place to test this fishing pole.  Rolfs fish and big and powerful and will test your gear to the limit.

The lake did fish hard and I caught a couple late carp and about 15 skimmers for my 71lb 8oz.

Last fish was this 13lb common, which was hooked in the tail, and almost made it to peg 9's bush........ no joke.  This tested my new pole to the limit!

Rolfs - Open

  • Around 32lb (2 carp, one was 12lb and 13lb of skimmers)
  • Peg 29
  • 8 people fished
  • Last as I DNW

The lake was flat calm, and was always going to be difficult, a lot of fish cruising around before the match started but soon disappeared when the match started.  I fished for carp for the first 40 mins, which result in one missed bite and then fished for carp in the last hour, but still couldn't catch.  Fished for bream for the middle three, on worms, and caught two carp and only 3 proper bream.  Hopefully, will fish a lot better on Saturday for our MFS match.
Rolfs's Lake carp do fight so hard, especially the 8lbers!!

Well done to Dai for winning.

Alders Farm

  • Peg 6
  • 183lb 5oz
  • 42 people fished
  • 21 Pairs
  • Section win
  • 2nd overall
  • 5th on pairs, lost out on count back of weight.

Alders farm is great venue and is full of fish, in all the lakes.  Today there is a pairs match so me and Jon Walker were the partners in crime.  We decided that I would fish match lake and Jon would go to the silver lake.  To be honest, Jon is fair better angler than me up in the water and this lake requires a little more finesse, whereas the match lake is normally aggressive lake, as in catching lots of fish and being ultra positive, which suits me down to the ground.

My approach was on the match lake was:

1.       Casters and corn down the edge.  With 0.3 and 0.4 float in 10 - 14 inches of water, may seem very heavy, but it gives the stability and gives proper bites when you keep a tight line.

2.       Feed meat at 5 meters and maybe shorter if the venue turns into a bagfest, and hopefully fish meat over the top, however rudd are a BIG problem, which they were, then paste over the top.  Why not fish pellets and paste?  Well, in my limited experience on the venue, pellets can problems with hitting bites and bringing smaller fish.  It worked well on the day....

3.       Method feeder at 5m or further out

4.       If I drew dam wall, I would fish up in the water because of the depth.

Tunnel Barn

Maver Match This

  • Peg 28 Ext
  • 47lb 12oz
  • No good, I think about 70lb would of won the lake.
  • 97 anglers fished
Found tunnel a tough cookie, and would like to crack it...... a great venue

After spending two practice sessions I have learnt a little and has been an eye opener on the wide range of methods that do work at the moment.  You have the bread man Paul Newell and Andy Jackson who have their fair share of success to say the least and they do deserve credit in prefect this method.  At the same time, my team mate Kevin Fowell who does well on casters and Pete Rice catching well on maggot.  Then finally Pete Caton and Stu Palser who have been catching on worms.  So this shows that an awful a lot of different methods work, so will ensure that I will fish my own match,  so worms and peat for me and paste short.

The Open matches have had good turn outs and has attracted good strong field of anglers and the ones that I have mentioned above and no doubts ones that I haven’t mentioned (sorry).  This always makes it challenge to take on the venue experts, as the same as any venue.  I have struggled with Tunnel Barn Farm, as it doesn’t suit my style of fishing and I do need to adapt more and need to rotate lines and defiantly feed less bait!!   One thing that I have learnt on carp fishing is that you don’t always have to prime a line, if anything this is a negative impact, which has been against everything I have spent on a river or canal bank.  As canal fishing you may have to build a swim up for 4 hours before going on it.  Don’t get me wrong I fished two matches last year, drew canal 3 (good area) and was 2nd in the Fish O which was over 100 anglers, however drew on New 16 and blew out.  However this year is was 3 – 0 to the fish!
