Got battered both sides again

Was pleased to draw peg 13 at Ivy House Lakes match lake.  Good steady draw.  Hopefully going to catch skimmers and carp, well this was the plan.... Didn't happen, had a nightmare match and got battered both.  Suffered foul hooking and missing bites, so need to adjust my feeding and rigs, as my peg was capable of 150lb.  So disappointed in my performance, I will be determined to get it right!!!  Wish me luck....

Ivy House Lakes

Peg 2
83lb
Won match
2nd in silvers
14 fished.

Ivy House Lakes match lake fished pretty hard in the heat, but hoped it would be better today, as it was cooler and overcast at times....

Started at 5 meters on pellets and caught one 8oz skimmer, which was a BAD sign, as normally this is worth 2lb to 8lb in the first five mintues, and the second week in a row I've failed to catch on this line....... Maybe I've told too many people??!!

Looking around the lake a little frustrated, i saw a few early carp were caught.  Andy loydd caught really well early, but it slowed down for him.  The lake was fishing hard and unbelievably  I failed to catch on my normal worm mix, which was another banker... So fished the swinging rig, which only produced one decent carp, 8lb, after 1 hour and 30 minutes things were looking bleak and even
I got the paste out, which I am very rusty at, considering I used to fish it all the time..... So pleased to win the match.  Learnt loads, so hopefully I will have another run on paste like I did years ago?!?

Peg 4 Island Pool

This was a good draw for me on Island Pool, the teens are good as the wind has been blowing into that bank for a few weeks, but had some room, next peg was peg 35 and its shallow and fish cruising and blowing all over the peg.

One thing I've learnt about Island Pool is you can try and do too much, and loose yourself which I have been guilty of plenty of times.

For me, it was a pellet match and a bit of Bait techs special G groundbait for the method and or the pellet feeder.  Gear wise, normal set up.

Colmic Spider Line 0.152 to 0.125.

SCRAPE Next Adventure 45 and 60 rods.  Zartan Reels.  0.20 Colmic Method line

Had a bit of nightmare of a match, fell in twice, due to borrow someone else's leg, which wasnt capable of taking my weight.  Lost at least two fish out of my keepnets, due to almost EVERYTHING going in the lake.  Put the rod in the reeds, then the rod almost got dragged in whilst in the lake, and then played the fish, which done me on the rope.....  Frustrating day.

Mick Telling - Wickwater 2

Peg 12
34lb
Section win
7th overall
20 fished

Going back to one of my old haunts, Wickwater 2 aka Staits Lake, on the South Cerney water.  I've had some great matches years ago and I won't bore you with the old years.  Hey' "don't look back, look forward".   I had some fun times with the old man, especially on the Thursday night league, that was awesome.  I did feel strange to fish this lake without him and I am getting a little emotional even writing this piece on him now.

The fishing match was a sell out and all 20 anglers turned up that was suppose to, so happy days.  Expressed the rules and wanted to ensure everyone's nets were bone dry, especially with KHV out break.   The weather was far from ideal, it was hot, really hot and the British weather has finally got good.  I pegged the lake, which I knew was going to be a little difficult on the bottom bank, especially with overlap.  I expressed my concern in my opening/ welcoming speak and that I wanted "everybody to enjoy it, and be mindful of casting especially on the bottom bank, and it's only a fishing match".....   I got Matt Greaves son Finlay to drew me a peg, peg 12, which was the bottom bank with the wind bowling into it, couldn't ask for more of a peg?!

The match started with me feeding to pole lines at 6 meters and 13 meters, short line pellets and paste and long line pellets only.  Chucked the pellet feeder 20 yards, on my trustee Colmic Next Adventure 60 and unfortunately it sat there, no liners nothing , but had a couple of small carp crash in the edge, so decided to chuck the pellet feeder into the corner after a quick look on pole.  Things were looking bleak after 40 mintues and Glen Picton had a couple of carp on the Waggler, and Andy Burns also switched to Pellet Waggler and caught.  I'd been pinging, my waggler/ bomb line for about thirty mintues and after Martyn Howard taking the pi$$ out of me, I chucked the bomb round, ate my salad and too my surprise the rod got dragged in!!   Unfortunately, the peg never took off, and had two quick bites on the pole, which result in one lost carp, a 6lber at the net and his smaller brother instantly followed.  This was looking grim for me, frustrating, but enjoyable.  I had 7 tiny carp and 8 roach for 34lb, which wasn't enough to get me through, I lost two carp on the bomb, one pulled out instantly and other half my back.  Gutting, this match meant more to me than the Fish O Mania qualifiers.... didn't get through.
Always next year.

Ivy House Lakes

  • Peg 7
  • 62lb
  • 2nd overall
  • 16 fished
Drew peg 7 on the match lake, which is a reasonable area, can't complain and has an empty peg to my right.

How I would fish Ivy House Lakes.
(match lake)

Set up.

Colmic Airon F44 pole
Colmic hollow elastics (white 1.5mm skimmers and blue 2.3 for carp)
Colmic F1 Spider Line 0.152
Colmic Stream hook lengths (0.125 carp and 0.10 skimmers)

Colmic Mikes and Jon Walker pellet diamonds.

Line 1.

No matter where I draw on the Match Lake I will ALWAYS start at 4 sections of my Colmic Airon F44 pole, which is just under six meters.  I will have a negative pellet attack.  I toss pot 10 pellets before I feed anything else anywhere else in hope for a early carp or BIG skimmer.  This works 95% of the time and feed my Line 2 worm mix.  However, today i failed to catch short, first time in eight matches this year.

Line 2

My Worm mix is like a paste and it works on lots of different venues, I caught a lot if fish at Rolfs Lake too.  I did have the silver record there too.  How I prefer my worm mix is simple, wash worms off to make easy cutting and then add Micros, caster, corn, Bait Tech special G or Bait Tech F1.  I didnt  feed three kilos of worms to catch over 100lb of skimmers.  I do dislike people that spread or try to spread rumours.  Who can afford to feed 3kg of worms on one match???  I rarely feed more than 700 grams of worms, as it's bulked out with other key ingredients to catch your target fish (2lb to 3lb bream).  I honestly believe my mix is better than a standard mix of "chop worm and caster" and is less risky than cupping in a lot of groundbait in.  Results do the talking.  Enough said.

Line 3

Long pellet line.  This is something I haven't got sorted.  One thing with me, I don't lie.  All my posts on my blog are honest and truthful.   Pellets are important as if you fish worms all day your unlikely to win both.  So pellets have to be on your bait table.

Line 4

Margins.  Ideally you need room and ripple.  If you have both,  then your lucky ( Martyn Howard draw).  My set up is 0.152 spider to Colmic Mike float and 18 hook.  This line is incredibly strong and has a fluro Tech, and will get you more bites!!

Bream were a decent stamp, but struggled to keep them coming.  Last hour couldn't catch any, gutted and cost me the silvers

Lindholme - Open

Peg 74
162lb
Third overall

Was keen to fish Thursday's open match today, especially how well yesterday fished in the Fish O.  I drew peg 74, which had loads of room, but must be getting old as had to ring the guys up to ensure that I sat on the correct peg.... Going to be a bad day fishing???

Shipped out my trustee Colmic 16 meter F44 pole and started pinging pellets.  Next mistake.... Two small carp and a small F1 and a few missed bites, things were looking bad. After 40 mintues of frustration, I decided to get the worms out.  This was a good move, started getting a few of fish together, F1's and Ide.  However after a good thirty mintues the fish started coming up in the water, foul hookers and missed bites.  Nightmare was back, 2 hours into my fishing match and I was going no where.

Therefore, off my box again and got a up in the water chop rig, this was ok, but small fish (ide, roach, skimmers, tiny f1's).  I felt my match was slipping away despite no one really catching, and the only thing I was enjoying was the pi$$ taking (a lot of friendly banter) and for once it wasn't me!  I had to do something so got the micro pellets and soil and cupped it in like that to push fish on deck and used 0.4 float and began to bag on f1's, decent Ide, barbel (don't they fight) and small carp.  This was a good, but still felt I needed more.  So opened up a couple of edge lines, and it was good, but could catch on the mans rig (0.188 spider and the Green colmic hollow), instead using a light 0.13 rig and caught a lot of carp down the edge.
