Jon Walker catching some munters again.............

Introduction

The biggest issue with Alders farm is the distance from my house to the venue, if it wasn’t 90 miles away I would be there every week!  The surroundings of the venue is very scenic and there are three main lakes to choice from, with a couple of pools which are also rammed full of fish.  The match lake (the pump house) has 38 pegs and the match weights are huge.  Now 300lb plus weights maybe not everybody’s cup of tea, but after a bad week at the office I do find it very appealing, as at the end of the day we go fishing to carp fish and I really do believe that you shouldn’t fail in that department.

The Specimen lake (pine lake) is a little bit special, I haven’t fished any matches on the lake, but have pleasured fished after a couple of matches and there are so BIG carp, Nicky Dean has had them to 28lb on the pole!  Me and my good friend Jon Walker have caught some big doubles, well Jon has had two twenties, whereas I have had 19lb, close by no cigar.  However this lake has big bream, as team mate Mick Denton has shown in the Angling press.  There is also good head of tench, rudd and loads of tiny carp with has been bread in there, shows how healthy the lakes really are.

The top lake (silvers) is again full of carp, maybe not as many as the match lake, but still has impressive weights.  This lake as a few islands and a couple of “jungle pegs” so be warned that you need some gear to get these fighting fit creatures out!

If you need any advice then speak to Trevor Price, who is normally on site and is a very good angler and could not fail to help any kind of angler and will hopefully improve your day no end!  There is also a small tackle shop there with bait and bits also.

My Match

The most important thing is to get into a rhythm and keep putting fish into the net.  A lot of it is about catching short, 5m or even less and down the edge.  Pellets, meat, corn, maggots, caster all have their place.  As there is a lot of fish present and therefore would fish to your strengths, so it you like fishing paste, then would go down that route, especially in the summer.  The stamp of fish are 1lb to 3lb is about the average, down the edge you maybe able to line up 5lbers and this is where a big weight is on the cards.   I like to fish casters and corn, as sometimes the fish can feed funny on pellets and therefore could end up missing bites and foul hooking!  So casters and corn is a good bet for me, I know so anglers do well on maggots down the edge as well, but concerned about the volume of rudd, and therefore I would sooner fish casters and corn.
Drawing peg 3 is a good area, and therefore was pleased to draw it, but the match didn't go as expected and it was tough by Alders farm standards and have caught well in stages down the edge which was my saving grace, but I thought that I was miles behind Dell, didn't realise it was so close.

Solhampton Fishery

15th July Duck (sunday evening match)
  • 182lb 8oz
  • 1st place
  • Peg 6
Was very pleased to draw peg 6 as without any question it is a very good peg and does win a lot of matches, so when I drew it I did get some stick over it (understandable). Was going to keep it very simple, pellets, corn and casters. Was going to fish 3.5 meters in front of me, on the slop and to my left hand margin which was two meters away and that was it.
I started a little slow on the top kit and within 15 minutes fish were coming down the edge and therefore after catching two small "stockies" I decided to go down the edge which was a good move but was catching small carp down the edge and was spooking big fish as I hooked these keen hungry 2lbers and therefore got off my box and put a paste pot on and fished a big piece of paste (walnut size) and this increased my stamp of fish and only caught odd small carp.
I had an enjoyable night and caught some nice fish. Looking forward to next Sunday’s evening match.

Karl is the man to beat.  He was 4th tonight, which is unlike him as he had won the last three matches!

Keeps it simple.  Top kit fishing

There is so "lumps" in Solhampton

Large head of Rudd in valley, 52lb of them.

MFS - Alders Farm

Day One
  • Peg 10 Match Lake
  • 207lb
  • Section Win
  • 3rd overall
Middle Lake, where the big fish live along with lots of bream and tench.

Match Lake

A video of the lake lake

A little disappointed to draw peg 10, as it is a bit too far down and going into the deeper water. However do have some move to my right and therefore hopefully catch down the edge and catch on the method feeder at 4 meters. My good friend Jon Walker had drawn peg 3 and peg 2 wasn't drawn, so hopefully he will have a great days fishing......

I started at 4 meters on pellet to catch three rudd in as many chucks and 4th cast caught a carp that was smaller than the rudd. So got the method rod out and placed it at 4 meters and it sat there...... After 4 quick casts I finally caught a carp about 8oz. This wasn't looking good and looking around the lake I was getting "wasted" and I do mean "WASTED". Dell next to me was baggin. So I had a few fish down the edge after 30 mins, so decided to go down there and sacked for hour and half. It was hectic fishing and was catching well, but went iffy and I struggled to catch out. But the last hour I got back to catching well again. Was surprised to weigh in 207lb and my mate Jon weighed in 160lb. What a venue, the fish are very fit and fight hard.

Day two

  • Peg 31
  • 52lb
  • 3rd in section
  • 11 carp
With Gary Thorpe drawing this peg the day before and weighing in only 7lb I was kind of worried that I was going to be in for a very tough day.  Gary Thorpe not only a great angler but also fishes the venue a lot as well.  However, hopefully the lake will fish better as it's seen so bait and more rain!

Looking at the peg it wasn't and proved to be like the "krypton factor" in fishing, as I fished 16 meters into the jungle

Me and Trevor Price was 3rd overall which was good.  Will do a write up......

Fished the middle lake afterwards and caught a couple of munters......

One day i'll catch a 20lber in this country..........

Rolfs Lake

  • Peg 8
  • 291 lb
  • 1st place
  • 16 anglers fished

Was very pleased to draw peg 8,  however as always the pressure is on as everyone expects you to win off this peg.  This is my chance to try and do my 400lb in five hours, but this could be a difficult day as we have had so much rain over the last few days.  Also the weather has been unsettled and therefore these big fish can switch off, as any sudden pressure change could switch the carp off.  So bearing this in mind I will feed casters, with tiny amount of corn (1 tin limit) and feed pellets in the last hour when they switch on.......... also fed pellets at 6 meters in open water from the start.

Feeding casters will help me catch chub, as peg 8 has a good head of chub infront of it and also will catch some bream.  Phil Powell, venue expert, advised me that there are good head of silvers and possible to do 40lb of them off the peg and maybe even more.  The big bream shoal tend to be in the big lake at Rolf's lake, so doing a big bag of silvers is unlikely.

I had a great day's fishing caught Carp up to 17lb, Chub up to 4lb and a couple of Bream up to 3lb.   I fished long all match, 14.5 meters.  I used 0.2 Colmic Carp 1 float straight through to 0.20mm Colmic Stream 16 Drennan Carp Feeder all match to Double 14 solid Vespe Elastic.  I looked around the lake and saw most people were stuggling a little and also bringing fish over my 6 meter line without spooking anything I decided to stay long and picked off fish most of the match.

Not all the carp are massive..... honest

The fish do fight hard, so ensure your gear is up to it

8lb common's seem never to give up.
