Angling Trust Canal pairs. Devizes. Pile.

A2
8lb 10oz
Third overall.
Third in zone
Not good enough
Only 18 anglers fished. 😦

My first attempt at the Angling Trust Canal pairs, and my partner was Steve Stretch Saunders.  I drew A2, which was good, mouth of marnia is where you wanted to be, peg 4 and 5 apparently.  Peg 5 wasn't drawn, as one pair didn't turn up.

For me the first thing i took to my peg was a method rod with pop ups.  But looking at the peg and the people of the boat and moving around with bright sun, i didnt fancy a carp.  I had.....  ready.  But never picked it up.

I fished one line with Marukyu Sweet Fishmeal and the other with Marukyu Fine Canal, nice and fruity.  I cupped in 5 BIG balls of fishmeal with dead maggots and a bit of worm at 14.5 meters down the peg atva 30 degree angel and then 13 meters infront and 5 meters.

Boats were busy, so decided not to feed loose worms to begin with

Jon Walker canal special

Nice bag of fish, the picture doesn't do it justice.... just like my decision making today.  Never thought 10lb would win.

I love these Jon Walker canal float... as they are awesome. Why?
1. They don't crack at bristle.  Slapping rig in fast when speed fishing is aggressive.

2. You can see them.  Bad light on them winter leagues.  Very visible.
3. The wire don't bend
4. They don't leak.  They aren't sponges.
5. They are £2 each
6. (Not sponsored)

M.A.M Final - Heronbrook

Peg 6 Canal
61lb
Last
107 fished

Firstly I would like to thank Steve Marshall for running the MAM matches.  I already look forward to 2019.

Heronbrook was todays final, and i drew peg 6 canal, which in my opinion was a decent area, but wanted to be two pegs up, as Peg 8 Canal is normally the flyer as its on the point.  This is closest ive ever got to it.

The match

What a nightmare, the lad (a local) to my right fished very negitive match catching F1's steady short and Stu went down the edge after 30 mintues and didn't look bad.

I couldn't catch F1's and couldn't catch down the edge.  Things looked and were BAD, really looked bad.  Wasn't 100% what to do, so started dumping maggots in the reeds, which worked well, for three drops and three carp for 20lb.  Then it become a battle, loosing a few carp in reeds and wasting time down my edge than would not come alive.  My 61lb was last.   I ain't one of those people that tip back and say i had 100lb, but "whats the point weighing".....

Oh well, third time lucky i hope for next yeah and ill catch a few.

Always try and get board weight.  Paper don't lie

Match lake was surprisingly hard.

Ivy House Lakes

Peg 33
61lb
Second on lakes
4th overall
16 fished

With the girlfriend working, I was going fishing.  Ivy House Lakes was my home for the next few hours...

Last peg in the bag, peg 33 on Moorhen again.  Very slow to begin with... had 11lb of silvers, 8lb of carp in first 5 hours.  Tgen 6 carp in the last hour on dumping maggots to far bank.  A bit rough.  Couldn't catch on paste, or pellets or corn .... The locals keep telling me this is a "flyer", but I feel I could draw on the brook behind me and that would be a flyer 😂😂😂.  On all seriousness looking at the results, peg 33 Moorhen ain't thrown up for while.... no excuses, only like facts, but would love to catch for half the match, and I reckon you could do 150lb to 180lb!!  Next year I will fishing these canals a bit more!!

For me, the Winter leagues are around the corner, I will focus on Angling Trust Winter league for Devizes, hopefully the team will win it again?  Also I will start going to Manor Farm Leisure now and get a few opens in prior to their winter league, as I'm out of touch on the venue.

Gwinear

Peg 49
63lb 14oz
Third overall
25 anglers fished

The last day for Swindon go On Tour.  Our own festival finished yesterday, which I was lucky enough to win.

Todays open match was a Gwinear, with a few sore heads.... especailly Mick Lanes as he fell over.

Drew peg 49, which looked awesome and I could get to the next platform with ease.  So happy days.  Dark groundbait as the water is quite clear, Marukyu Pellet Skrunch is prefect groundbait, mixed with plenty water, so his heavy and dormant.

2 carp down edge, rest on worms at 13 meters.

Oakside Fishing

Peg 4
18lb 5oz
Second overall
19 fished

Never fished Oakside Fishery before, so was going in blind like a lot of us today.

Today saw the final day of our 5 day festival at Oakside Fishery.  This festival was done on total weight.

None of us was knowing how it was going to fish, was a little exciting, Dangerous Dave told me there was quite a lot of roach, with a chance of skimmers and BIG bream.  So happy days.

Got myself some J Range 3 - 5 hollow and thread that of the morning.  Fished 13 meters on the deck and shallow with maggots, it was better than caster?!?  Not sure why.  Then had 50 roach on single dead red in the last 45 mintues at 5 meters over Nut Skrunch groubdbait, loose feeding hemp and maggots.  Nice day, had 18lb for roach, for second overall. Also I won the 5 day festival.

J Range.  3 - 5 was spot on for today.

I do love catching roach.  I was a little unprepared for this match.  But would love to go again.  I think I could do 25lb of roach next time?

Love my UK2..... seems to be my lucky charm

Pellet Skruch and Luxs Sweet fishmeal

Drew up in the corner of the lake and fancied it, only concern was lack of wind..... unfortunately fish followed the wind again.  So only had to sellte for a £2 side bet from Derek Newson....

Day 4
73lb 9oz
Peg 28
3rd overall
31 fished

Back to Gwinear again and drew peg 28, but this time is not an end peg and every peg is in around this area.

The first 2.5 hours I had 1 carp and 9 roach.... then i started to catch on worms and a couple of units down the edge

Lost second place by an ounce to Neil Richards.  Also to add salt to the wound, lost pairs by 2oz!!  A dropped a roach..... an expensive roach.  Sorry Derek Newson.

Well done to Phil Powell and Mark Baston on winning the random pairs!!

Day 3
112lb
2nd overall
20 fished

Dangerous Dave

Day 2
Gwinear
Peg 38
81lb
5th overall
Section win
31 fished

The first day of our festival.  Open match at Gwinear

Day 1
Gwinear
Peg 28
158lb
Match Win
10 fished

I've never fished a match before whereby Derek looses his trolley in the lake before the match starts, fair play to Jason jumping in to get the stuff!!!  It don't stop there, mid match Steve Rich (aka Stich) jumps in head first.....

Anyway back to the match at Gwinear, we had a ten peg knock up, the owner gave us half the lake, and I drew spot on.
