Manor Farm Leisure - Round 1

  • Peg 38 Boundary Pool.
  • 30lb 2oz
  • 4 points out of 10 points (not good off the best peg on the lake)
  • Team was 8th? out of 10.

The first round of Manor Farm Leisure winter league saw me on Boundary Pool 38, Big Frank on peg 22 Middle Pool and Glen Picton on peg 16 Island.

I got the peg I wanted, this is my favourite peg on the lake, as this is the middle of the lake which is where normally the fish shoal up.  However, today wasn't my day, was disappointed not to catch on the straight lead, or feeder and the waggler.  This was concerning as the only productive method was the long pole. I wish I got blinkered and fished a tidy match on the pole for 4.5 hours and waited for bites, as the peg was worth 50lb and not 30lb!!!  I had skimmers up to 2lb and a few 10oz's and 4 F1's.  Lost one carp down the edge, which was foul hooked!!!

Mistakes (lessons learned)

Should of fished lead into the middle of the lake for the first 30 minutes, like most people.....
Then fished the pole all match long and cute.
Should of feed 2mm pellet and corn down the edge and not maggots.

Manor Farm Leisure - Middle Pool

Peg 8
71lb 12oz
4th overall.
14 fished.

Nice to get some bites, as my last 3 matches have been grim! The last 40 minutes saw my peg fade away and Mick Lane, caught 5 fish to beat me for the section. Well done "LEWIS".

Mark with 62lb of F1's

Looking for to the teams of 3. Will be interesting! Fingers crossed for me, Frank and Glen.

Manor Farm Leisure - Bounday and Windmill Pools

Peg 33 Boundary.
15lb.
No good.
17 fished

Waited 44 mintues for a bite.......

Boundary Pool fished really well in places, I could catch small skimmers reasonably quick, but they were 6 to 8 to the pound and in reflection I could of had 20lb plus, as i did have 1 skimmer about a 1lb and 2 F1's so you should get bonus fish when fishing skimmers, but I fish to win and felt this was way too negitive.  Feeding 2mm and fishing 4mm expander on the hook.

Gear used

Colmic Airon F55 Pole
White Elastic 1.5mm
0.4 and 0.2 Jon Walker pellet diamonds
0.135 F1 spider main line and 0.10 Stream hooklength
18 WN501 hook

New Colmic Rod feeder rod (more info later on)
Zartan 4000 0.20 Colmic Method Line to 0.168 F1 Spider Line
16 Drennan Feeder Carp.
Smelly meat.... (NRG)

Avington- Kennet and Avon Canal

Peg 18
3lb 11oz
No good
21 Fished

I do think that the Kennet and Avon canal has to be one of the best canals in the country.  It is full of fish thoughout most of all the stretches.  I have spent many hours on it, and have had more good days than bad.

The canal fished well really, with 19lb winning from peg one. There was 8lb and plently of 7lb weights.
Avington fished a bit harder than normal, as they gave us 15 yard pegging, which is a little tight. If i'm honset, but everybody caught. Average weight would be 5lb. I had plenty of bites, would sooner of had a few more!!! But hey ho, looking a 2lb perch wasn't a good way to start the match!!!

My section was
Peg 21 7lb 4oz
Peg 20 5lb 4oz
Peg 19 3lb 8oz
Me 3lb 11oz
Peg 17 DNW
Peg 16 4lb

Manor Farm Leisure

Peg 23 Middle Pool.
82lb 8oz
2nd overall.
15 fished.

I had a good days fishing at Manor Farm Leisure, lost my way in the middle of the match, lost a few fish, so put lighter elastic on, which made was a lot better, 1.5 Colmic Hollow Elastic from yellow 2.1 and even pink 1.8 bumped couple on that!!!
Lots of my fish were hooked in top skin of the lip (if that makes sense).  A few outside of the mouth!!! F1's are nightmare at the moment.

Manor Farm Leisure.

Peg 12.
43lb 6oz
1st place.
7 anglers fished the match.

The wind made it difficult for all to fish, and 3 of us had the wind howling in our face.

I chucked the method twice, which resulted in a lost small skimmer. Went onto the pole at 13 meters, and had 4 f1's and a skimmer bream in a many puts. Then I started to miss a few bites, so put a expander pellet on and caught small skimmers, 3oz er's, going no where. Wind got really strong, therefore went on the pellet feeder, method and straight lead (not at the same time) and this resulted in a tiny F1.

Went down the edge, and got myself out of trouble, but not on the pole, on a tiny method feeder. Caught all F1's and 4 dog roach!
Unlucky to Barry, as i just beat him by a pound and he had a carp jump out of his net!

Manor Farm Leisure - Island and Middle Pool

  • Peg 28
  • 66lb
  • 2nd Section
  • 7th overall
  • 25 fished the match

Nice days fishing, but couldn't catch any Carp.
I fished my Colmic Airon F55 pole 14.5 meters to my right where the peg was slightly deeper, and this my only productive line, which was my down fall.  Also I pushed my peg too hard with feed in hope to try and catch some carp which did cost me as I messed up my peg, and my last 45 minutes saw me catch nothing!  I watched my match fade away again!!!

Oxford Canal - Kidlington

1lb 8oz (about 65 fish)
Peg 31
36 Fished

The Oxford Canal is one off the narrow canals that I fish. Normally the canal will not exceed to 13 meters and n places is only 8 meters wide. Therefore it is important not to have tight pegging and also be. Areful what you feed and when you feed it.

I have fished the Oxford canal for 10 years and more, I haven't fished it exenstly but I have fished it reasonably amount, twice a year.  Fished NFA reginal match (was lucky came second overall thanks to a lucky Chub), but I've never done a decent bag of roach, whereas Kennet and Avon canal is insane around Marlborogh, Hungerford and Kintbury, and I'm sure I missed out a load of stretches, but these are the ones I know and fish.

Oxford Canal isn't fished like it used to be and therefore we were all in the same boat, none of us know....
The normal approach is to start of bread, and hope to catch skimmers on it early or poissibility of roach on a smaller piece of bread. If you catch roach this is a VERY good sigh, as your joker line will be stronger and hopefully you won't be catching "waspie perch" which will run out.

The next bait on the agenda is Lob Worms (no surprises there). If your lucky enough to catch on bread, and then you go onto catch on lob worms, you should be getting section or framing .  Lob worms are a must in my opinion. Also if you haven't caught on bread. Then you need to pray that your catch on lob worms, otherwise you are in trouble!! As it's very unlikely that you can catch enough joker fish to get into the frame or even get a section win, unless immensely tough.

Tackle

Colmic Airon F55 Pole.
Damper Elastics 0.8mm
vespe 2 elastic in shallow water.

Perch Rigs

0.165 to 0.125 Stream. 12 N600 hooks to a Colmic 2.5mm elastic. This may seem heavy, but the fish aren't fished for heavily and therefore won't be so line shy. Next week could be lighter.  The elastic MUST BE SENT SPRINKIE, To set the hook. Perch have very boney mouths and you must sent the hook! Otherwise you run the risk of loosing them. And 1lb perch is mega points on any canal match, especially on the Oxford Canal..

I had 30 roach in first hour on bread and the next 30 mintues had 16 perch, Ruffe and odd roach. Then 11.36 match was over!! Boat destroyed mine and next doors peg. Sat there for the next 3.5 hours to catch very little, 5oz.   Lob worms let me down!!!!

Peg 31 1lb 8oz
Peg 32 DNW
Peg 33 1lb 12oz
Peg 34 2lb
Peg 35 2lb 12oz
Peg 36 4lb 11oz

One thing I noticed about the weights was further you walked, the better it was. With the water been so clear, the fish were walked down on this fishing match!!!
