Grand Union Canal at Milton Keynes - "Deans Road"
Deans Road again and I drew next to my team mates, Matt and Micky, at least I had someone to talk to.  I wasn't looking forward to this and felt we were at the wrong end of the section, as the fish were going to be further up in the town, where it would be slightly warmer.  Sure enough I found myself praying to catch a lob worm perch, which resulted in one tiny perch, not sure who caught who?  As the lobworm was bigger than the perch. I had told all my team mates that  Micky had a 2lb perch and weighed in 1lb 8oz (along with his other 6 tiny fish) "lol".

I had been up here three times now and beginning to worry about the Angling Trust Semi Final now, as I haven't really caught anything, therefore had learnt very little.

We had two 24 pegs........................

Top 4
  1. 5lb 5oz ........ not sure of the name
  2. Shaun Barrett 3lb 6oz 8
  3. Martin Phipps
     3.  Danny Ashington 2lb 3oz

Grand Union Canal - Milton Keynes

  • Peg 45
  • 15oz
  • Section win
  • 58 anglers fished

Another tough match was on the cards for me.  All the features on the far bank and been cut dowm and dropped into the canal.  Therefore there was branches everywhere, and I had lost one of my lucky Colmic floats plumbing up!

I had 11 fish for 15oz and 10oz of that was a perch over my light leam mix.  The canal was so tough as four anglers to my left DNW (they all caught, but very little) and two anglers to my right also DNW (which included my old team captain).  This was worrying as only three anglers weighed in!

50 lob worms and match pack of bloodworm and Joker is all that was needed.

Catching a 10oz perch on single joker and a size 28 hook.

Milton Keynes - Grand Union Canal

  • Peg 1 (end peg)
  • 3lb 8oz
  • 2nd in my 12 peg section
  • 30 anglers fished
  • 70 small fish (mainly little perch)

This is the first of our three practice opens on the Grand Union Canal at Milton Keynes prior to our Angling Trust Winter League Semi Final.  The canal has been fishing hard and shocked to only see 30 anglers fishing our match.  It is worrying to see what the future holds for Team Match Fishing?  Every year now I see a decline in the Semi Final matches.  I remember fishing here for Devizes and there was 17 teams fishing!! What has happened to the anglers?

No big perch for me.  Gutted.  Needed a bonus fish.

I was lucky to draw an end peg, but would of sooner been further up the section, as when I weighed everybody in, we noticed that there was more roach further up the section, whereas me and Mick Denton couldn't buy a roach!

Peg 1 3lb 8oz

Boundary Pool

Mark Malin using the Colmic Airon F55 Pole

Island Pool at Manor Farm Leisure is doimated by bomb through the really cold months. Don't get me wrong other methods will work, pole, waggler, maggot feeder and method, but for me the bomb has proved to out weigh the other methods in my opionion.

Boilie Kit

PVA Bags
Bombs/Leads 1/4oz to a whopping 3oz.

Ensure your gear is up to the job!  0.185mm Colmic X5000 line is the minimum hooklength that I will use with "Boilie rigs"
Drennan Carp Feeder 16 or 14
Ringers boilies
Old hooks used as "pins" and would suggest super glue the end

Colmic hook wallets a good way to go to store your hook lengths.

Some of the fish are big (8lb - 15lb)

Mark Malin has had some great sucess on the complex on bread.  Using 10mm pieces.

Bob Warren Memorial on the Kennet and Avon Canal at Bath

  • Peg 11 (not an end peg...... i wish it was!!)
  • 5lb 13oz
  • Section Win
  • 2nd Overall
  • 33 anglers fished

I haven't fished Kennet and Avon canal at Bath for about three years since the last semi final matches and them matches didn't go well for me.  Steve Long (he has a fast van) encouraged me to fish Bob Warden Memorial match and said he would book me in and sort my bait out.  Can't get fairer than that.

The match organiser also had pairs match on also, so me and Steve went in for and we ended up drawing next to each other (peg 11 and 12 at Darlington Wharf..... I think).  The match started very slow for me and Steve and didn't help a boat moving off just into the match, where we just fed.  Our bread lines were devoid of fish and therefore I looked for a early perch on half a lob worm and lucky enough it went under twice for two perch both about a pound a piece.  Happy days!!

After an hour of stracthing my ass and rotating lines I started catching tiny roach on joker, but at least I was putting something in the net and also I was lucky to net 2lb perch on size 26 hook IM1 and 0.064 Colmic Stream Line.

I was pleased to weigh in 5lb 13oz, especially after Kevin Dicks telling me that this wasn't the best of areas.  The match raised £231.20 in aid of Lung Research.  Many thanks for the people that run the match

3rd Andy Ottaway 5lb 9oz
4th Joe McMann 5lb 8oz
5th Jamie Cox 5lb 7oz
6th Darren Gillman 5lb 6oz
